You would think that hanging up laundry in your own backyard would be a pretty safe activity, wouldn't you?

But in the outback Queensland town of Charleville, 94 year old Phyllis Johnson faced an unprovoked attack from a giant red kangaroo on her own property.

She told reporters "It was taller than me and it just ploughed through the clothes on the washing line straight for me.
"I happened to have a broom nearby and I just started swinging at it. I bashed it on the head but it kept going for me. Not even the dog would help, it was too frightened."

Luckily, she managed to crawl into her home, where her son called the police.

The police then faced their own kangaroo attacks. It took two round of pepper spray before it left the scene. The animal was later trapped by rangers.

The attack on Phyllis Johnson was not minor. "... I'm OK, although the 'roo took a chunk of flesh out of my leg and there's a chance they'll have to operate.."

Kangaroos aren't generally known for their aggressiveness. In fact, before the attack, Phyllis Johnson even fed them bread.

"They've always been so gentle," she said.

"They weren't as big as that one though and they've never gone for me like that. This one seemed to target me, it was putting its feet into me and kicking."

What would make a kangaroo so aggressive as to attack someone that was obviously no threat?
