Rape is NEVER legitimate

Thumbs Down to the Republican Party

First, some common sense, eloquently stated:

Rape is rape. And the idea that we should be parsing and qualifying and slicing what types of rape we are talking about doesn't make sense to the American people and certainly doesn't make sense to me. So what I think these comments do underscore is why we shouldn't have a bunch of politicians, a majority of whom are men, making health care decisions on behalf of women.

You would think that in today's world that a President would even have to make a point of stating what should be obvious to everyone.

But no. Montana Republican Todd Akin made this bizarre statement the day before, when speaking about pregnancy as a result of rape:

From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare...
If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist.

Rather than issue an immediate press release disavowing Akin's remarks, Mitt Romney responded on a telephone interview with National Review Online.

Congressman’s Akin comments on rape are insulting, inexcusable, and, frankly, wrong. Like millions of other Americans, we found them to be offensive.

He added that his view was "entirely different" and that Akin's statement was "entirely without merit and and he should correct it."

Unlike some of his braver Republican colleagues though, he did not call on Akin to resign.

Akin, for his part, says only that he "mis-spoke". Huh? That doesn't sound like he's wizened up at all, only that he wishes he hadn't spoken his thoughts out loud.

Well, women of America, the election is coming up.

You DO have a way to try to shut that whole Republican thing down.
